Stella’s name requires some explanation. She left Poland at age 11 after her birth mother, Sophie Sudol Lasica, pregnant with her eighth child, lost her husband Jan in 1962. Stella went to live with her aunt, Maria Lasica Bordon, in Canada. The adoption took two years to complete, partly because of the Communist bureaucracy. En route to Toronto, she passed through New York on July 14, 1964, at age 11 with her uncle and guardian, Adam Lasica. Janina Sudol Lasica and Chris Lasica, then 5, joined them in Canada in April 1966.
Stella Lasica Bordon Karniej still keeps in touch with Jean Lasica Wojcik in Florida, her first cousin once removed. She is Joseph Lasica‘s second cousin, and was the first Lasica relative I contacted in Canada.
