Short bioZofia shared a birthday with her husband, who was 11 years older. She was the birth mother for nine children. After her husband died in 1962, she gave up one daughter, Stella, for adoption by her sister-in-law, Maria, when Stella was 9. She was seven months’ pregnant when her husband died. When she died, she was still living in the same house she inherited from the Lasica family in Spie, Poland, since the late 1960s.

- A snapshot from Mary Lasica’s first trip back to Poland in 1986. From left: an unidentified man; Jozef Lasica (Mary’s cousin and Zofia’s son), who moved to Canada the following year; Mary Lasica; Mary’s aunt Zofia Sudol Lasica; and Walter and Anna Sudol (brother and sister-in-law of Mary’s mother, Janina Sudol).
- A photo from Mary Lasica’s trip to Poland in 1986, taken at the Lasica family farmhouse in Spie. From left, Anna and Wojtek Sudol (Mary’s mother’s sister and brother, related to the Lasicas by marriage — Walter is now deceased), Zofia Sudol Lasica (Mary’s aunt, no relation to the other Sudols) and Mary Lasica. Says Chris Lasica: “This was my grandparents’ home (Jozef and Jadwiga Lasica). We lived in that home until we came to Canada (in 1966), and then the house was left to Zofia, since she was a widow and struggling to raise eight children.”
